I'm an avid reader and have been for some time but I will admit that the reason for me picking up this novel was not for the intrigue of it but because I had too. I won't go into any detail as to why, but it was a case of needing to read this not wanting to read it.

I have to admit that at first I struggled with this novel. Yes it captured my attention as it started off by being introduced to a little boy who was so very different to his peers and for that reason always felt alone, but it was the use of language that had me struggling to follow the story-line. I don't know weather it was a case of a use of overused words or weather it was simply a case of myself being unfamiliar with the use and style of language. I'm honestly not sure.

I persevered with it and once I got to approximately half way all of my doubts simply fell away.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and Daniel Rooke's story.

We meet Daniel as a little boy. A smart little fellow, but also alone. Not understanding his genius, he always saw himself as different.
With age Daniel's goals is to be an astronomer. But to get there he enlists. His first battle was something only nightmares are made of, but after a time Daniel finds himself with the opportunity to travel all the way to New South Wales to study the skies.
But what turns out to be a trip about the stars becomes quite different.
Daniel finds himself befriending a native of the land (an aboriginie) a young girl who teaches Daniel her language and inturn Daniel teaching her his.
But when a tragic incident takes place, Daniel is ordered to fight the natives of the land.
What Daniel does next changes the whole course of his life.

Overall, The Lieutenant was an insightful, powerful, in depth read that I thoroughly enjoyed. A novel in which never in a million years would I have ever picked up but glad I did.

This book of Kate Greenville's is a delightful insight into the indigenous people of Sydney Harbour that the Lieutenant gets to know, that enables the reader to be as close as the diarist who informed the writer, to the point that I feel like I can see them and identify with them, as well as I identify with myself. The same intimacy and understanding as i have found in the book "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin about the Muslim people of Northern Pakistan, and probably, why they are nurtured into a terrorist approach to the rest of the non-muslim world.
As the Emperor told Mozart ---"there are too many notes" so too with this book----too many words. This is the weakest of this brilliant author's books on the settlement of Australia. Her descriptions of winds, skies, bodies of water, landscape and her pages of the protaganist's thoughts, feelings,internal ruminations seem to go on and on. Not too much of a story here. The most interesting parts are the protagonist's interactions with the natives in an effort to learn their language. However, if you are interested in early Australian history, as I am, it is worth a read.
I read this book just prior to a trip to Australia and Sydney, where it takes place. It tells the story of one man who landed with the first ship of British convicts being transported to Australia, the first settlement of what is now Sydney, and of the first relations of the Brits with the Aborigines in this area. It is very closely based on a true story. When in Sydney, I was thrilled to visit the spots described in the book and to learn about the real man. A remarkable story and significant piece of Australian history. Well written and a pleasure to read.

This story, which shares sympathies with Conrad, is told in spare but reverberating prose, of the empathetic meeting of two people of different ages, genders and cultures.
I loved the novel. Nowadays we are very conscious of the consequences of Colonialism. It’s impact is explored through the protagonist Daniel Rooke. I felt that the novel was a pertinent and prescient reminder of our duty as humans to respect ourselves and others, particularly minority groups. Kate Grenville brings history to life and in the process reveals how hard it is for individuals to have a voice against Bureaucratic or institutional violence.
This is a poignant story of a young man/marine/astronomer/linguist of a "developed" culture coming upon a "primitive" culture. He develops a friendship with a young girl as they begin to communicate, learn each other's language, and reach across a cross-cultural chasm. The story is set in the late 18th Century, when Great Britain, in its colonizing fervor, is just beginning to explore Australia. The sense of humanity of some characters conflict with the honor and loyalty of the British navy/marines. The moral issues are not simplified for the reader, but rather depict reality in a complex light. I will always remember the metaphor of warming one's hands at a fireplace, then using one's hands to warm the hands of another in need. It is "putuwa" in her language, and it became "putuwa" in his also.
