Grant and Twain The Story of an American Friendship Mark Perry Books
No real fireworks here. Instead we have good, solid research and exposition of a relationship and correspondence between two men who, each in their own way, and together - as this book suggests, shaped American thought and identity.Contemporary history has by and large shortchanged Grant, and most Americans don't appreciate the breadth and depth of his formidable, homegrown intellect. Nor do many realise what a decent, honourable man he was. This account goes a long way to setting the record straight.
Twain, of course, needs less introduction, but it's the details of his life, the self-promotion and focus on amassing wealth mixed with immense talent and native genius, that make his place in this narrative so interesting.
Combine these two quintessentially American thinkers and actors, chart the evolution of their friendship through correspondence, and you have an immensely fascinating and satisfying read. Well structured and well written, it's earned a place in essential reading for students of American history.

Grant and Twain The Story of an American Friendship Mark Perry Books Reviews
Wonderfully readable and a refreshing look at a most unique relationship. Would highly recommend
Great book and as a fan of Twain's efforts to assist General Grant to completing his War memoirs before Grant died. The history of Grant was published in the "Century" Magazine', the money from these published historical facts were instrumental in securing the Grant family needs before Grant's . Grant died about a month after the work was completed.
Grant and Twain is a very interesting story of these two American Heroes. I am afraid that, although the author did an excellent job of presenting their lives and much of their personalities, he fell short of showing me how their friendship changed our country.
I grew in admiration for General Grant. He is not often kindly treated in history books. Perry presents him as a admirable and honorable man as well as a good general. Mr. Perry gave some very interesting insights into the character of Mark Twain. His foibles were as well presented as were his talents. The background information about the writing and publication of Huckleberry Finn was enlightening.
Grant the commander of northern forces and Twain a deserter from Confederate forces, surely they could not be more different. In many ways they were different, in one they were inseparable, that is they both fit the definition of “rectitude”.
A well documented read about two of the most intriguing personalities of the 20th century. However, I felt that the author had to stretch a bit to connect the two individuals, relying primarily on the belief that both the Grant and Twain struggled to deal with ideas about slavery, race, and prejudice. Not a bad read if you enjoy reading about historical figures but far from a page turner.
A fabulous book about two men that I admire greatly. I'm amazed that this story hasn't been told before...every American should read this. I was so touched by this book. It's about friendship, courage and loyalty, qualities that are so lacking in modern life. It's almost difficult to say enough good about this story.
I learned a lot more about Grant than I had previously known---especially his later life. There was very little about Twain---in fact I wondered why they were ever linked in the book. Grant was fully flushed out; not so much Mark Twain.
