The second book in the series is even more impressive than the first (which I thought was brilliant). This series really connects the reader with the characters. You really come to care about the main characters. You root for the heroes and it gives their successes and failures that much more impact. The villains are also excellent. Not many authors thrive at making villains that you truly hate but this series has them in droves.

I had one issue with this book and there are SPOILERS ahead in this paragraph. There is a scene where the main characters inexplicably do not kill one of the main villains despite having him dead to rights. This scene was completely incomprehensible for me and it took me out of the book for the first time in the whole series. It took a couple of chapters to get past that and the fact that they let him live comes back to bite them later. The thing about it was that there was simply no reason they would have done that considering what he had done to them and the danger he presented to them for the future. If the author wanted him to live, he could have accomplished that in a much more believable way. It didn't ruin the book or anything but it was a significant misstep which stood out against the rest of this amazing story. SPOILER END

The plot and pacing of this book (and in fact the whole series so far) is just excellent. You can't put it down. The author effectively creates uncertainty about what will happen and whether the main characters will succeed or fail. I can't recommend this series enough.

It is rare when an author can make four books in a series, all interesting, fun, emotional, serious and light at the same time. I love coming of age stories that constantly test the protagonists to be inventive, courageous, and pair them against impossible odds. The skill it takes to build up to a big event and yet avoid the simple path to the resolution...making the reader appreciate the art of storytelling. This is also a book for this age. There is a lesson to be learned about human nature, but simple pleasures to enjoy. A good read...now for that last book!
Anyone that thinks that a series featuring characters in their teens is written just for teens really needs to read this series. The amount of suspense, action, and character development is just fantastic. Yes, you see the characters learn and grow in their power, but it's in the midst of adventure and battles, not in the relative safety of a school. Plus, there is so much more going on....Friendship, loyalty, betrayal, personal growth, family, struggle to determine what is right, and so much more. I'm really glad I started these books and can't wait to see what happens in the next one. This is quickly moving up my list of series to recommend to anyone looking for a new series to try.
I really enjoyed this book, it never feels rushed or forced. The characters continue to grow and mature, one life lesson after another without becoming cynical as a result. As in the first, the potential for greatness exists for the protagonist but it's not handed to him on a silver platter. Where many fantasy books grant power then wisdom, this series seems to attempt the opposite. I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys great stories, where character grow, mature, make mistakes and face their past and fears.

Once again Sever Bronny ROCKS the world of fantasy with ACTION, SUSPENSE, and DRAMA so much that you just want more! This book was lots longer than the first so you get more of everything but, it's still leaves you wanting the next installment ASAP! Bronny's characters grow stronger and bond closer as they work on mastering their skills from time after time of harrowing situations. It's a story that makes you want to jump inside the book and live the experience yourself. I can't express enough in my mere words how great this author is and how epic his characters are. You are just going to HAVE to read it yourself. Bronny is brilliant, a very talented author. I CAN'T wait for the next one!!
This was tougher for me and my wife to get into. I can't go into too many details because what really irked me was the plot. I wanted it to go different directions but it went somewhere else, or I wanted a quicker pace but got left with something a little slower.

In spite of that, I loved this book for many other reasons
- I love the character development of the protagonists! Really coming together cohesively.
- I like the lore, the worldbuilding, and the attention to detail given by the author. He's really leading up to something bigger, I appreciated the additional layers of complexity, the cool characters, etc.
- I was glad for a new spell!
- Once you finish this, you get to go to book 3, which starts to get even more extreme, baby! If this is your least favorite book in the series, then take joy in that the rest of the series will be AWESOME! (WHICH IT IS!!)

Honestly I had to Google what Riven was. Great title for a book. Go read this and then go read the next 3 books! DO IT!
Once again, Sever Bronny has taken us on another breathtaking journey.
As in his previous book, Arcane, his characters come to life. I find myself falling in love with some of them, being frustrated by some of them, and absolutely abhorring many of them.
And then there is Anna Atticus Stone again . . . my-oh-my, what an awesome great-grandmother she is. I want one!!! She absolutely belongs in my memory box. You really should meet her!'
But, prepare to hold your breath sometimes, want to hide your head under a pillow sometimes, want to slap a character really hard sometimes, and have a hard time putting this awesome book down.

I have just finished his new book "Valor!" And here I was afraid Mr. Bronny couldn't possibly keep up the pace. Boy-oh-boy, was I ever wrong . . . you're going to love it too. But know this, you MUST read them in order to really appreciate the magic that is Sever Bronny!
